Kitchen Safety for Kids

Cooking is a fun and tasty way for kids to learn a little math, a little chemistry and how to follow step-by-step directions. Keep it safe with these commonsense rules.

Kitchen Dos & Don'ts

  • Young children need to be supervised by an adult or responsible teenager if the project involves sharp knives, the stove, boiling water, hot oil or melted sugar.
  • Never leave cooking food unattended.
  • Use proper safety equipment: oven mitts, hot pads, tongs, aprons.
  • Damp mitts and pads will not protect from burns.
  • Keep the handles of pots and pans turned inward on the range top to avoid accidental spills.
  • Keep flammable objects away from open flames.
  • Be sure your kitchen is equipped with a functioning fire extinguisher and that everyone knows how to use it. Keep the phone number of your fire department next to your kitchen phone.
  • Do not wear loose or flowing clothing while cooking.
  • Provide sturdy step ladder for younger children to reach countertops.
  • Use a cutting board.
